Nikolai Schukoff

Born in Graz, this Austrian tenor is one of the most promising young voices on the international opera and concert circuit. Following his studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, he made his successful debut in May 1996 as Alfredo in La traviata in Gelsenkirchen (Germany). While with the company in Gelsenkirchen, he was already being invited for guest appearances by the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Düsseldorf), Salzburg, the Opéra de Lyon, the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Opéra Comique (Paris), Scottish Opera and the Sydney Opera House.
His international breakthrough came with more dramatic roles including Siegmund in a concert version of Act I of Die Walküre at Berlin’s Philharmonie in December 2006 as well as Parsifal at the Bayerische Staatsoper in April 2007. Other highlights include his portrayal of Sergei in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Grand Théâtre de Genève as well as operetta galas at the 2007 Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, followed by Don José (Carmen) at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Max (Der Freischütz) at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and Danilo (Die Lustige Witwe) at the Hamburgische Staatsoper as well as Parsifal, Dionysus (The Bassarids), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) and Erik (Der Fliegende Holländer) at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and at the Edinburgh Festival. Nikolai Schukoff has also performed the role of Parsifal in a concert version of the opera at the Palace of Arts in Budapest and in Santiago de Compostela as well as Števa (Jenůfa) at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Pollione (Norma) at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Parsifal at the Semperoper in Dresden, Don José (Carmen) at the Baden-Baden Festival and the Zurich Opera, Pylades in Iphigénie en Tauride in Barcelona, Jim Mahoney (Mahagonny) in Toulouse, Don José (Carmen) in Hamburg, La página en blanco (a creation at the Teatro Real in Madrid), Parsifal in Munich and Paris and Loge (Das Rheingold) in Montreal.
Future projects include Quint and the Prologue (The Turn of the Screw) in Vienna, Grigory (Boris Godunov) and Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos) in Valencia, the title role in a new production of Parsifal in Lyon as well as in a revival in Hamburg, Florestan in a concert version of Fidelio at the Prague Spring Festival, Erik (Der Fliegende Holländer) in Hamburg, the Prince (Dvořák’s Rusalka) in Gothenburg, Don José in a new production of Carmen at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, Danilo (Die Lustige Witwe) at the Teatro Real in Madrid and Enée (Les Troyens) in Barcelona among others.
In 2005 he appeared with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome under Gustavo Dudamel with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, at the San Sebastian Festival with Mahler’s Eighth Symphony and at the Vienna Musikverein with Schmidt’s Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln (including a CD recording). He performed Das Lied von der Erde with the Radio Orchestra at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as well as with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Lucerne and Berlin Festivals and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in London, all under Christoph Eschenbach. Nikolai Schukoff also appeared in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony at the Paris-Bercy Hall with the Orchestre de Paris under Christoph Eschenbach and in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig under Riccardo Chailly as well as with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Marek Janowski in Basel, Lausanne and Geneva and with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (again under Marek Janowski) at Berlin’s Philharmonie. In 2008-09 the singer was invited to perform Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder at the Festival of Saragossa and in Barcelona, followed by Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach, Siegmund (Act I of Die Walküre) with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Marek Janowski in Geneva and in Lausanne, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony in Copenhagen under Ion Marin as well as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Madrid and at the Festival de Saint-Denis, Das Lied von der Erde with the Orchestre de Paris under Christoph Eschenbach in Paris, Das Klagende Lied with the Orchestre National de France under Daniele Gatti in Paris, Verdi’s Requiem with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC under Christoph Eschenbach, Missa Solemnis with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in Lisbon, Guido Bardi in von Zemlinsky’s Eine Florentinische Tragödie and Bruckner’s Te Deum with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
