Graduated from the Glinka Choral School in 1957 and subsequently from the Leningrad Conservatoire, having studied choral conducting and opera and symphony conducting. Has been with the Kirov (now the Mariinsky) Theatre since 1961. There he has conducted the operas Eugene Onegin and Boris Godunov. He continues to work as Chorus Master in which capacity he is responsible for almost the entire Mariinsky Theatre opera repertoire.
